Meet Madam Kwan Swee Lian, a warm lady in hat and glasses who always have a smile on her face. She is 83-years old and still wake up at the crack of dawn daily to oversee all the food preparation at the central kitchen.
Madam Kwan: Her Untold Story and Beloved Recipes is a book to pay tribute to Madam Kwan’s rich life story as well as to feature 25 of her favourite recipes from her childhood and from Madam Kwan’s. It is written by Madam Kwan’s granddaughter, Catherine Foo. She said at the media event that the book was easy to write as the story written by itself and putting them into words was not hard for her. The book tells the tale of Madam Kwan, who is a beauty salon businesswoman with no cooking experience moved into restaurant business that eventually build a successful enterprise with her son Rudy and daughter-in-law, Maureen Ooi. Readers would also be expecting to go on a emotional roller coster of strength and determination as the biography touches Madam Kwan’s personal life and losing her eldest son and his family in 1993 Highland Towers tragedy, followed by losing yet another son within a decade.
Not just that. Madam Kwan also introduced the new Madam Kwan’s Curry Paste that is infused with various aromatic spices at the event. This convenient ready-made curry paste enable Madam Kwan’s fans to recreate their signature dishes such as tender beef rendang, chicken curry, fish head curry and curry laksa with ease at home.
Datin Maureen Ooi, the Chief Executive Officer of Madam Kwan said that Rudy and herself wanted to publish the book to honour their mother’s achievements which comes with some of her beloved recipes because the two parts play an equally important role in her life since the beginning. She added that the book is a tribute to an amazing woman.
