As part of Sunway REIT effort in encouraging the public to quit smoking for a cleaner air, a campaign aptly named “Clean Air – A Smoke Free Environment Project” was launched. Three local internationally-recognised artists, Kenji Chai, Caryn Koh and Louise Low partnered up with Sunway REIT to support and create public awareness on smoking hazards. How? They do what they do best – wall murals interpretation of their hopes and wishes for cleaner air. These murals are located on exterior walls around Sunway Pyramid.
Doctor turned self-taught artist Caryn Koh’s masterpiece titled “Bloom”, located at the mall exterior next to Sephora. Her mural portrays a smiling school girl surrounded by a bed of bright yellow sunflowers and breathing in clean air, unfettered by toxic fumes. Like many of her artworks, the piece is gentle and subtle but nonetheless deep and meaningful.
Titled “Resurrection,” Sandakan born graffiti artist Kenji Chai’s masterpiece is located at the Ground Floor, adjacent to the Sunway Pyramid West Link Bridge. Kenji’s work depicts a sharp juxtaposition between a healthy, happy and non-polluted city vis-à-vis a hazardous smoke-polluted environment. The symbolic transformation of the pigeon reflects on the choices that mankind is given – either they can create a better environment or destroy the beautiful ecosystem. It clearly sends a message on how both nature and humans can thrive in clean air, presenting a positive hope for the community which is free from cigarette smoke.
Louise Low, who is known for her bra art which challenged social conventions, has come out with a masterpiece named “Rose Petals,”, located at Mall’s Lower Ground 2 Level, on an exterior wall behind An Viet. An interactive piece which invites members of the public to reflect on the beauty of nature, mirror shards form a rose, from which 3D ruby-red petals emanate their fragrant scent, unencumbered by smoke-filled air.
